I have seen 2 kinds of 3pt disc harrows. One has adjustable angles the other is fixed. Does the adjustable angle have an advantage over the fixed disc?

The angle of the disc gangs controls how aggressive a disc cuts and also how much HP is needed to pull it. Increasing the angle makes it more aggressive, decreasing the angle improves the ground finish. It's possible to set the front discs to cut a lot and the rear one s for a smoother finish.

I suppose I should say that I don't have a disc and read the above description in a Landpride operator’s manual as well as descriptions on other manufacturer web sites. The Landpride manuals are available on-line but require a free Adobe Acrobat reader to view them.

Disc harrows have a purpose and that is to cut the ground. Depending on the disc blade curvature depends on the most aggresive angle of the gang placement. To have the ground level after discing depends on the blade spacing normally the offer from 7" to 13" for big cutting discs. The wider the spacing the higher the weight per blade and the better cutting action. The narrower spacing is considered a finishing disc. Many manufacturers set the angle to the angle they have found works best with there harrows blade curvature thus eliminating the extra looseness needed to have parts that move or slide that bend and fail. ....

Nellie,I'm new to the CTB, but I own a 4' tufline disc. I have the tge model. It only weighs about 250lbs.I added an adtl` 250 lbs and it cuts ok. But this is red clay we are trying to cut here. This model does have the adj, gangs and I probably would not get one that didn't have that feature. You can quickly adjust the cut and finish. Growing up on a farm also helped me to make my descision. ....
